Our Team

Our amazing team of Mad Scientists dazzle children with their outgoing personalities that bring our science programs to life! Every member of our staff is focused on creating unforgettable experiences for each and every child; helping us spark imaginative learning throughout the Maine & Southern New Hampshire area.

Each one of our Mad Scientists has experience working with preschool or elementary-level children. They have excellent presentation and classroom management skills, and they have all undergone an extensive background check.

Amethyst Amanda,
Program Manager-
Amanda has been a teaching artist for 17 years and loves working with students of all ages! When she's not working in the lab or doing Mad Science shows, you can see her performing in various theatres around Portland. She has always loved science and is excited to inspire kids every day!

Catalyst Corey,
Special Event Instructor-
Corey is a working artist and educator here in Portland who has a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts, with an emphasis in Illustration from Montserrat College of Art. Catalyst Corey began his teaching career as an Animation Instructor.

Jetpack Jed,
Senior Instructor-
Jetpack Jed got his BA in Psychology from Hendrix College in Conway, AR in 2008. He moved to Maine in 2012 to run a small bed and breakfast in Kennebunkport and immediately fell in love with New England.

Nichole Troe,
Managing Director-
You can find Nichole tinkering in the lab, making cool gadgets, designing the website, leading the strategic planning effort. Nichole took over as Co-President in 2010. She graduated with a BA from Cornell College and is completing her LMBA.

Taryn Friedman,

She has been Co-Owner of Mad Science since 2010. She graduated from Union College in 2002 with her degree in English Literature and a minor in Biology. She has over 10 years of experience in experiential and environmental education.

Kinetic Kelsey,
Marketing Manager-
Kelsey hails from Oxford Hills and has worn many hats in her professional and theatrical career. From being a medical assistant, an emcee, a teaching artist to a marketing specialist, she has enjoyed many wonderful opportunities. Kelsey’s true passion is performing!

Jupiter Jenna is a mother of 4 from Aroostook County! She has experience in Environmental Science and Water Resources and over 10 years in the administrative field. Coming to work for Mad Science of Maine, combined her skill set, love of science, learning and child enrichment perfectly!

Amanda Butcher,
Operations Guru-
Amanda hails from the shores of Lake Erie, via the mountains of Montana. She has a background in public education with almost a decade of teaching hands on curriculum to elementary students. She wants every student to be independent, have fun, and learn through a creative, questioning process.

Sparky Sarah,
ASP & Workshop Instructor-
Sarah is originally from the land of waffles and fries: Belgium! She holds master’s degrees in medical biology and biochemistry. After a few years in research, she realized her love for educating young minds about science and decided to become a teacher.

Magnetic Meredith,
ASP Instructor -
Magnetic Meredith grew up in Fryeburg, ME and has spent the last 16 years in Bend, OR working with children. She taught in a classroom, designed around project-based learning and focused on the engineering design process. She has returned back home to Maine and loves fostering curiosity in kids!

Krypton Kristin,
ASP Instructor-
Kristin has degrees from Yale, MIT and the University of Southern Maine.
Kristin is involved with several Boards including the Maine Maritime Museum. She enjoys sailing, skiing and knitting, and she lives on Orr’s Island with her husband, a poet, Craig, and their 17-year old black cat, Zephyr.

Jess has worked as a naturalist on Maine whale watch boats for 20 years, teaching all ages about the delicate marine ecosystem. She's a small organic farmer and loves providing wholesome food for her family and community. She has a BA in Human Ecology from COA and a MS in Environmental Mgmt. from the U of Maryland.
