After School Program Instructor Teacher Job Description

At Mad Science of Maine we are having a BLAST! We pay you to have fun! Build and fly rockets, demonstrate lasers, explore the states of matter using dry ice, and help children make slime!!  You will inspire the next generation of scientists, teachers and engage kids through our innovative activities.  As a Mad Science Teacher you will lead students through inquiry-based instruction by demonstrations, hands-on activities and amazing take-home projects during our After School Programs.


Part-time After School Teacher positions are available for candidates who:

  • Have some experience teaching groups of children ages 5-12
  • Have at least 3 weekday afternoons available after approximately 2pm. 
  • Are outgoing and have a fun personality
  • Have a Valid Driver’s License and A Reliable Car

As a Mad Science After School Teacher/Instructor, you will facilitate 3 to 5 Mad Science Programs at schools in your area for an 8 week long session for K-5th Grade students. Each program is an hour long and will require additional time for set up and clean up before and after class. As our programs happen during after school hours, you will visit a max of five schools per week depending on your availability. Each week, you will teach a different fun, hands-on science class to your groups of kids.  Some of our class topics include Super Power Sources, Junior Reactors, Magnetic Magic, Watts Up, Energy Burst, Radical Robots, Slime Time, Atmosphere & Beyond, and many more!

$30-37.50 per one-hour class.  (With set up and tear down it averages between    $15-18 per hour. Raises are given to teachers based on performance.)

$100 Training Stipend for each 8 Week After School Session.

$15 Stipend for at Home preparation prior to the in house training

$5-10 Stipend for weekly equipment pick up.

A $35 returning bonus is offered for each 8 week after school session that a Mad Science teacher returns for.


TRAVEL REIMBURSMENT - If you are scheduled for a program location that is more than a 20 mile round trip, we compensate at .44/mile above the 20 miles.



-Must live in Southern Maine

-Must have at least a High School Diploma

-Teaching Degree or College Degree is highly desirable but not required. (Especially a degree in education or science)

-Must have experience working with or teaching groups of children at a school, camp or after school program setting.(paid or volunteer) Having children of your own DOES NOT qualify you.

-Must be able to manage, educate, and entertain a classroom of up to 20 children (ages 5-11) at a time without an assistant.

-Must have a reliable vehicle.

-Must have a valid driver's license and current proof of automobile insurance.

-Must be available between the hours of 2:15 - 4:30pm Monday-Friday for at least 3 afternoons per week.

-Must be able and willing to travel a 15-40 minute drive to get to a program location.

-Must be able to attend our weekly equipment exchange meeting. (Thursdays, 5:30-6:30pm)

-Classroom/Group Management skills are a must.

-Lively, Energetic, child-friendly personality.


ABOUT TRAINING – We set our Mad Science After-School Teachers up for success with a paid 4 hour Orientation and 5-6 hour paid Training on the curriculum and awesome gear that is used to facilitate our fun hands-on programs! This mandatory training will give you the basics you need to translate your skills into being a "Mad Scientist."  We provide a program manual and training videos for our instructors to get familiar with the curriculum prior to our in person Orientation and Training.

Birthday Party Lead Entertainer Job Description

 Do you have experience working with children?  Do you have a theatre or performer background?    Could you transform yourself into a Mad Scientist? Looking for a great, flexible part-time job? 

The search is on for part-time, animated Entertainers who feel they could transform themselves into Mad Scientists for a few hours a month on the weekends for Mad Science Birthday Parties.  A potential Mad Science performer must have experience with elementary school aged kids (grades K-6), be comfortable and enjoy performing for small groups of kids and parents (15-30 kids), and be interested in working on a very part-time basis on the weekends. Experience with and a love of performing and an interest in science is essential, though we will train you on all the experiments and demonstrations.   Birthday Parties are 1.25 – 2 hours long and take approximately 40 minutes to set up and 20-30 minutes of clean up.  You must be available at least 3 weekend days per month.

Mad Science Birthday Parties are a combination of a show and hands on activities for small groups of 8-25 children.  Birthday Parties take place at the birthday child’s home or at the Mad Science Lab in South Portland.  Parties are scheduled on the weekends either in the morning or afternoon.  Depending on how many parties are booked on any given weekend, a Mad Scientist could be scheduled to perform 1 or 2 parties in a day…once in a while 3 parties in a day but 2 max is more typical.


Job Requirements for a Birthday Party Entertainmer:

-Must have a dependable vehicle with room for science equipment

-Able to travel to different locations in Maine and Southern New Hampshire within a 2-3 hour drive from Portland. 

-Must be able to commit to at least 3 weekend days per month (or at the very least 2 days but more days is preferred)

-Must be punctual (those who are chronically late need not apply).

-Responsible and easy to reach by phone & email.

-Have a BIG, fun personality.  Being goofy is part of what we do!

-Customer Service Experience a must.

-Comfortable being an ambassador for the organization you work for and communicate with clients in a respectful and professional manner.

-Have Performance Background for groups of kids in PreK-6th Grade (ages 4-12) and be able to "Wow" any audience.

-Have group/behavior management experience with Kids ages 4-12.

-Ability to work independently to perform party shows on your own.

-Good organizations skills is a must in order to keep track of and maintain organization of the science equipment used for the Birthday Party experiments.

-Enjoy story-telling, performance improvisation, and can take a script and make it your own to transform the experiments in to an entertaining show that will get kids excited about science!

-Must have flexible weekend availability. 

-Experience in plays and theatrics is highly welcomed!

-Ability to animate activities
-Do not need to have a science background, but an interest in science is crucial. We will train you on everything you need to know!

Summer Camp InstructorJob Description:

Are you looking for a fun job with children for the summer?  If you are a teacher, a performer, an educator, or entertainer this could be the summer job for you!  Mad Science of Maine is currently hiring Lead and Assistant Instructors for our summer 2019 Science Enrichment Camps.  


Camp Details:

Camp Dates: June 17-August 23, 2019

Training Dates: Tentatively schedule for June 11 & 13, 2019

Camp Days: Monday-Friday

Hours: 7:30am-3:30 pm (includes set up and clean up time).  At times staff are needed from 3-6pm for aftercare.

Camper Hours: 8:30am-3pm

After Care: 3-6 pm in Portland location only

Camp Locations: Portland, Augusta, Bath, Brunswick, Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Falmouth, Freeport, Gorham, Kennebunkport, Saco, Turner, Waterville, Wells, Windham, Yarmouth, and York!

Facilities: Mad Science operates camp programs in Elementary Schools and Community Centers.


About Mad Science:

Mad Science offers unique, hands-on, inquiry based science enrichment camps for children ages 6-12 (Grades 1-6) that are as entertaining as they are educational. Mad Science encourages scientific literacy in children in an age when science is as vital as reading, writing and arithmetic. Our summer programs are a great combination of learning and fun with projects, experiments and demonstrations conducted inside as well as active outdoor games that reinforce the science concepts of the camp program.  Camp Themes for 2019: Reactions In Action (Chemistry Camp), Brixology & Engineering, Spy Academy, Robot Recruit, MAKERS of the Future, and Mission Code.


Lead Instructors:

Lead Instructors are responsible for teaching the camp curriculum.  Facilitating Mad Science Camp programs requires lots of energy and a love of working with children.  With the help of an Assistant Instructor, the Lead Mad Scientist is expected to create a fun environment where Mad Science Campers can get to know each other, feel accepted and included, and learn and get excited about science.  One must be able to both educate and entertain to bring the curriculum alive for the children we serve. 


Assistant Instructors:

Assistant Instructors are responsible for supporting the Lead Instructor with equipment preparation and program facilitation in whatever way needed.  Assistants are expected to take initiative to interact with parents upon drop off and pick up and take initiative to interact with campers, especially those who need extra help with projects or with settling a disagreement with a fellow camper.   

Requirements to be a Lead Mad Scientist:

-Have an outgoing, animated, fun personality! 

-Must have a dependable car and be willing to commute to different schools and recreation centers within approximately 20 miles of your home. 

-Must have experience working with groups of elementary age children in a LEAD position (grades K-6) in which you have followed a lesson plan. We're sorry but just babysitting or being a parent is not enough experience. It must be experience with groups of at least 10 children between the ages of 5-12. 

-Classroom management skills a MUST!! 

-Organized, Responsible, Attention to detail, Independent and also able to take direction

-Be able to adapt a curriculum to a group of up to 20 kids who are in mixed grades (K-6, ages 6-12 years) and manage any discipline issues effectively and efficiently. 

-Must have availability Monday-Friday from 7:30am-3:30pm in the summer months from June 17-August 23, 2019 (or for most of the weeks in the time frame)

-Must be punctual (those who are chronically late need not apply), responsible and be easy to reach by phone & email

-Fun, zany, enthusiastic personalities especially welcome! Being goofy is part of what we do! 

-Do not need to have a science background, but an interest in science is crucial. We will train you on curriculum but it is up to you to bring it alive for the kids!


-Must be able to attend our training session in Mid June.

-Current CPR/First Aid Certification required for Lead Instructors

-College Degree is preferred.

-Teaching Certificate is preferred.

-Science Course work is preferred.

-Experience with children with special needs is preferred.

- Have an outgoing, animated, fun personality! 

- Must have a dependable car and be willing to commute to different schools and recreation centers within approximately 20 miles of your home. 
- Have some experience working with groups of children and enjoy working with children.

- Positive, high energy, “can-do” attitude a must.

- Must have availability Monday-Friday from 8am-3pm in the summer months from June 17-August 23, 2019. (There could be a week or two that an assistant is laid off due to a low enrollment camp.)

- Must be reliable, responsible and take initiative to engage with children in a camp setting and assist the lead Mad Scientist with any preparation of materials and facilitation of science experiments and activities throughout the day.

- Must be able to attend our training session in Mid-June.

- Do not need a science background but must have an interest in science and a desire to inspire a love for science in children.

- Comfortable interacting with parents and taking attendance of campers as they arrive and when they are picked up.

-Current CPR/First Aid Certification preferred (if you don’t have it we will provide this certification course)

-Some College Preferred

Lead Instructors:  $400-425/week depending on experience and number of campers

Assistant Instructors: $300-325/week depending on experience and number of campers
