Experience Mad Science Enrichment Camps

Mad Science has been sparking children’s imaginations with spectacular science in the summertime for over 18 years!

Our innovative summer day camps are guaranteed to engage and expand your child's mind, as well as offer them a big dose of fun. Your child will be given the opportunity to “DO” science through a daily combination of in-class discovery and exploration, outdoor games and physical activities, and hands-on applications of the scientific principles presented. They will touch, see, hear, smell, and taste what science is really all about.

FORMAT- All of our camps are offered in a full-day format from 9-3pm all week long Monday through Friday. Children can be dropped off as early as 8:30am. Before and After-Care is available in Portland, Waterville, North Yarmouth Academy, and a few other partner locations.
AGES- Most of our Camps are offered to children Ages 6-12 years old. One Pre-K camp is available for Ages 4-5, but only in select communities. Both the new "Mission: Code" and "Makers of the Future" camp are for Ages 7-12.
CAMP ENVIROMENT- We aspire to create an environment that is in every way safe, where encouragement, laughter, and fun are the standard. We provide 2 trained staff for every camp theme and cap our programs at 20 to engender this setting. We stand apart from other camps and maintain quality with our maximum 10:1 camper to instructor ratio. This supports the safe enviroment we build and allows for specialized attention to the varying grade levels during hands-on activities and projects.
UNIQUE PROGRAMMING- How do we make science fun? These are our main ingredients: interactive demonstrations, equipment that is the best in the field of elementary education, hands-on individual & group activities, problem solving group work, unique take-home projects, active learning games, and outdoor active games to give children a chance to move and enjoy our beautiful summers.
CAMP THEMES- We offer several themes that give your child the opportunity to learn about a full range of topics in the three main branches of science, as well as technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Read more about camp themes and why our enirhcment curriculum offers a high quality experience for your child.

CAMP LOCATIONS- We offer 1-2 camp themes all summer long at our main location in Portland. We also partner with various community organizations, recreation centers, and public & private schools throughout Maine & Southern New Hampshire, offering 1-3 weeks of camp programming. For the first time this 2018 summer season, we will be offering some camps in Southern New Hampshire. Topics will be released during the Spring Season.

REGISTRATION-  All camp program facilitation is conducted by Mad Science, while some registration may be handled by our partners. We offer two types of camps; "Mad Science Directed" and "Partner Camps". Registration depends on the type of camp. The first type is run directly by Mad Science of Maine and we handle all aspects of enrollment through our online registration system. For "Partner Camps," the prices, hours, and policies are determined by each partner organization. Registrations is taken directly through our Partners. All registration details for all types of programs can be found here.

DYNAMIC EDUCATORS- At Mad Science, we follow the model of being the facilitators of enriching experiences for children. We do this through the implementation of the inquiry-based science method in our camp curriculum and program facilitation techniques. Dynamic Mad Scientist's  provide the necessary tools, guidance, and concepts for children to embark upon fun scientific investigations in a safe enviroment. We hire qualified individuals with experience working with children and are skilled at getting kids excited about science. Each camp has a Lead and an Assistant Instructor. They receive a criminal background check, comprehensive orientation, and individualized training.

We are noted for our trademark 'edu-tainment' philosophy, which cultivates incredible enthusiasm and a sense of wonder in children. We believe that children are born scientists, naturally curious about the world around them and full of questions waiting to be engaged. We strive to harness that curiosity by sparking their imagination which we hope sets the foundation for a lifelong love of science and learning. Adherence to our core philosophies and beliefs that science should be fun, hands-on, and inquiry based make our camps have an impact for years to come as your child develops problem solving skills and deepens their scientific knowledge about the way the world works.

Experiential and inquiry-based approaches are central to giving your child a scientifically awesome experience. We put a special focus on questioning and experimentation. We seek to inspire "agency" in children as they pose questions and actively search for answers to these questions through hands-on discovery. We place an emphasis on trying new things, learning by doing, and enjoying the process of discovery. All Mad Science programs are developed by a team of professional educators, scientists, and entertainers to ensure they are accurate, educational, safe, and fun. Our Research and Development team spends years developing and testing unique curriculum that is kid tested and parent approved!

Summer Camps
2014 was the summer of robots for my son thanks to cosmic carl and the rest of the wonderful mad science team!!!! my son loved mad science robotics and was as excited about all that he was learning as he usually is when he participates in any mad science classes (this is his 3rd!). what a professional, engaged, flexible, terrific group you mad scientists are! thank you for another unforgettable experience!!!!!! see you in the months to come and certainly next summer!!!!

Summer Camps
My son had a great time at the robotics camp in Portland. He lives reach of the little robots he brought homm, and he'll show them to anyone interested. Cosmic Carl and Jenny Jolt were wonderful teachers. I just wish there were programs available in the Lewiston/Auburn area.

Summer Camps
The "My First Lab" Preschool summer camp was the first experience my daughter had in a classroom, being completely independent! I must say just how impressed I was with the staff (Rocket Ruby and Laboratory Laurie)their considerable experience with younger children and joy in working with them was evident, and immediately set my daughter and me at ease. The scientific topics covered would typically challenge the preschool set, but Mad Science distills it in such a wonderfully fun, memorable, and comprehensible manner, my daughter -weeks later- STILL brings up scientific information "Rocket Ruby taught us...." The take-home materials were also fun and of great quality, which of course was consistent with everything else about this camp! Thank you Mad Science!
