What ages are the camps designed for?

Summer Camps:  Most of our summer camps are designed for ages 6 - 12, entering 1st - 6th grade in the Fall. The minimum age requirement for our Robot Recruit Camp and our MAKERS of the Future Camp is 7 years old and children must have completed 1st grade.

For ages 4-5 we offer the "My First Lab" Preschool camp in Portland that runs for 1/2 a day Monday-Friday for 2 weeks out of the summer.

Vacations Camps: All of our Vacation Camps regardless of the camp topic are open to ages 5-11, Kindergarten - 5th grade.

How long has Mad Science of Maine been in operation?

This is the 17th year that Mad Science of Maine has been getting kids in Maine excited about science.

We have been running our week long summer camps in Maine since 2001.

Our local Community Center offers a Mad Science Camp, how are they involved with your program?

Mad Science of Maine has many partnerships with local schools, community centers, and businesses. For some of our Afterschool Programs and Camps, we are sponsored by community centers. Often times, the recreation center is in charge of providing the space, reaching out to their community, and handling registration. We operate as a separate entity, but rely on recreation centers to be a bridge to a community we wish to serve.

My child is not that into science, will they like Mad Science Camps?

Mad Science lives by an edu-tainment philosophy, which generally cultivates incredible enthusiasm and a sense of wonder in children. This is what truly makes our programs unique and enjoyable for children that usually have a moderate to even a low interest in science. Our programs are designed to get children excited about science and hopefully change the perceptions about the sciences.

My child is very active, would this program be a good fit for my child?

At Mad Science, we believe that the use of active learning techniques in the classroom make a powerful impact upon students' learning. We implement this strategy through interactive demonstrations, inquiry based discussions, group work, and hands on projects. Additionally, we know how precious Maine summers are, so we do our best to get children outside as much as possible for hands on activities and interactive games. All of our Instructors are trained to facilitate safe games and activities. We understand that children are full of energy and it is our duty to make sure children are given avenues for releasing this energy throughout the day.

My preschooler is almost four. Can I enroll him/her in your "My First Lab" Camp?

No. All campers in our "My First Lab" Camp must be four years old before the first day of camp to enroll.

My Six-Year old really loves robots. Can s/he enroll in your Robotics Camp?

We know we have a lot of 6 year-old robot fans out there because we get this question a lot! In our “Robot Recruit” camp, campers spend a full day of camp building robots which requires a significant amount of manual dexterity and patience. In our experience, most students younger than 7 years old tend to really struggle with this aspect of the camp which is why we have set the minimum age requirement at seven.

My child has already taken a Mad Science After School Program... Is Summer Camp different?

YES! Mad Science Summer Camps provide completely different programming than our After School Programs offer during the school year. For example, if your child took our Radical Robotics After School Program in the Winter or Spring of 2017, the Robot Recruit Summer camp for 2017 has all different activities, and different take home projects.  All of our camps are unique experiences, specially designed for a Full Week of Hands On Fun!

Are these the only locations where you are holding your camps this summer?

Maybe not. We may be adding locations, especially in the outlying areas. We are often making new partnerships in communities throughout the entire year. Additionally, there are some locations where partnerships may be pending due to contract finalizations. Look for potentially new locations until May. Click here to be directed to our Day Camp  Locations page.

Who are the Mad Science Camp instructors?

All of our camp instructors have experience working with children and possess a passion for teaching children of all ages!  Some of our camp instructors also teach our after-school programs that we conduct in over 40 schools throughout the year. Our Lead Instructors tend to be Certified Maine Teachers, Ed Technicians, or very experienced educators in the field of experiential and/or environmental education.  Our Assistant Instructors tend to be individuals who have some experience working with children in a supportive role and/or who are in College working toward a degree in education or science.  If you know someone who would be interested in working for Mad Science either during the school year or in the summer time please encourage them to apply online or give us a call for more information!

Summer Camps
My son Jamie just finished the Eureka camp with Circuit CC and Transformer Trey. He said it was the best camp he has ever done! He loved the instructors and they filled every single day with plenty of science activities. The instructors were organized and professional. Jamie was more and more excited to go back with each passing day. I would highly recommend this camp and these instructors!

Summer Camps
My son LOVES Mad Science and has learned so much. At 10 years old he says that he already knows that he wants to grow up to do something in the science field. He loves to attend every camp, every parents night out, and every after school program that he can. Thank you for providing such a fun learning environment for these kids!
