2016-2017 After School Enrichment Topics

Mad Science of Maine currently offers 4 different AfterSchool Enrichment Program sessions every school year. You can expect to see our Enrichment Programs in 40-50 Maine Schools for the 2016-2017 school year. Programs run for 4-6 weeks and cover a wide range of exciting elementary science topics. We have developed 9 different 6 week systems to always keep things fresh and new for the children that love Mad Science after school and attend every session.  All classes are highly interactive and include take home projects. Read more below to find out what makes these Afterschool Program topics so unique and cool!

Zone 2:  "BRIXOLOGY"

Have you ever wondered what clouds are made of, what goes on underneath the surface of the

earth or how toys work? Join Mad Science after school to discover these countless wonders of science! Neither rain, nor snow will disrupt our hands-on exploration into the world of meteorology and voyages to the center of the Earth! We'll investigate sound waves, suit up for a flight into space, and take a spacewalk mission that simulates a solar panel repair on the International Space Station. Inspect minerals with an ultraviolet light to see them fluoresce, investigate 3-D technology, and experience how this effect makes us feel like part of the action. Albert Einstein said “The process of scientific discovery is, in effect, a continual flight from wonder.” There is no limit to the wonder and imagination when exploring the many marvels of science!

Classes include:  Movie Effects, Earthworks, Living in Space, Science of Toys, Sonic Sounds, & Walloping Weather                     *The Fall, Marvels of Science Program will be a 4-5 week session depending on holidays and other no school days and thus will consist of 4 or 5 out of these 6 classes.

Has your mom ever told you that you have a big appetite? If so, then we invite you to “Take a Bite Out of Science” in this indulging afterschool program that will satiate your curiosity! In this sampler “course” children unravel the mystery of chemistry and watch crystals form in a water glass, experiment with hovercrafts, build and take-home Technicolor Blenders to demonstrate Newton’s color wheel invention. Grab your ticket to the stars, watch stardust burn, and investigate the sky with your own pocket sky map. Walk in the shoes of a detective and examine fingerprints, mystery powders, ink samples, and teeth impressions. Get bug eyed with an Insect-A-Vision take home that gives you an insect’s point of view. Whether you like your science savory, spicy, or sweet, this class is sure to satisfy all your curious appetite.

Classes include: Che-mystery, Detective Science, Lights, Color, Action, Sun and Stars, Under Pressure, & Bugs!

Robotics has never been this exciting! The applications of robotics is all around us and we invite girls and boys to discover first-hand the design, construction, and application of modern-day robotics. Through the integration of exciting modular robotics learning systems and various types of robots children will discover how robotic devices use sensors to learn about their environment and how people use robots to get work done. Explore the mechanical aspects of robots, circuitry, and programming. Discover circuits using squishy conductive dough and snap together circuit-board modules to perform exciting functions. Spend a class navigating programmable robots through obstacle courses. Children will have the opportunity to build their very own robot to take home with them. Mad Science has spent years developing robotics programs for elementary students; we can confidently say that we have robotics down to a science!

Classes include: Robot Challenge, Gear it up, Robot Building (4M Smart Robot Build), Robots In Action, Shocking, Isn’t It?, & Real Life Robots, & Get Your Code On

***Please not that your child will not build a take-home project everyday. Children only build a robot in the robot building class which they will be able to take home after class. Due to the high cost of robots and typical high complexity of robotic kits, Mad Science of Maine's choice for the robot build falls within the guidelines of cost and a child's ability to build the robot in a one hour class. Robots of higher cost and complexity would require several days of building. If you wish to know more about robotic kits and approriate kits for elementary age children, please contact us at info@madsciencemaine.com.

The Mad Science BRIXOLOGY Program sets the foundation for our next generation of makers! This program is unlike any Bricks program your kid has ever done! Kids learn about different types of engineering and then team up to construct a different engineering-themed project using LEGO® bricks. They learn about aerospace engineering while assembling a space station. They explore mechanical engineering as they build boats and vehicles. That’s not all, from carnival rides to drawing machines, mechanical animals to truss bridges, your future engineer will build upon their creativity to solve real-world design challenges, while developing their problem-solving and team-building skills. Let the tinkering begin!

Classes Include:  Aerospace, Creatures, Towers, Carnivals, Bridges, & Vehicles
